When you first stepped onto a basketball court, it was a brand new experience. There is more to the game that learning to shooting, dribbling and passing. These days, you may feel a lot like you've learned all that you need to know. In this article we will strive to share new and different ideas with you, no matter how skilled you are.

Dribble the ball correctly. You want to dribble with the tips of your fingers, not your whole hand. This provides you with much more ball control. Dribble on the sides of your body instead of directly before you, and bounce it waist level. Look up, not down.

One way to help improve your overall basketball skills is to spend some time watching what the pros do. Get tickets to some pro games, if possible, or catch some games on television. You'll be able to learn from the moves they make.

Never practice only against the zone. While much of the game is played in zone, the opponent can flip to man-to-man coverage, changing everything and surprising you. Practice with each type of defense so you will know what to expect.

If you're going to be a jump shooter, don't lift too many weights. Even though having strong muscles is great for the inside game, being on the outside it can harm you when shooting the ball. As a shooting guard, having bulky arm muscles can actually reduce the number of successful shots.

Make use of hand signals so that wild passes can be avoided. It can be frustrating to attempt to pass the ball to a team mate as that person is heading toward the basket. Hand signals can help you communicate with your teammate on the court. No signal, no pass.

Focus on your footwork and your core strength in your workouts. If the core muscles are in good shape, you will feel lighter on your feet. Work your ab, back, hip and buttocks muscles. Jumping rope can also help you become lighter on your feet and quicker on the court.

If your shooting is suffering, take a close look at your shoulders. When your shoulders are positioned improperly, you will never make the basket regardless of how good your abilities are. Your shoulders need to be squared up towards where you're shooting. The shoulder that is dominant should be perfectly aligned with the hoop rim.

The best free throws come as a result of routine. For example, many people touch their foreheads or tap their chest before making a free throw shot. Just remember it has to be fast and consistent. The reason is, this routine will put your body on alert that the next thing coming is a free throw. This will help insure your success.

These tips can help you advance your abilities on the court. Start working towards your goals and you can start bettering the skills you have. Put putting these tips to use, along with your plan, you will notice the difference in your game.
