Make it a point to concentrate on both your defensive and offensive skills. Focusing only on offense does not make you a well-rounded player. Basketball games are won with a good defense. While offensive players sometimes seem like the stars of the show, it is the efforts of defensive players that allow them to shine.

Practice shooting free throws. These shots may seem easy, but they can be quite difficult. You should practice as often as possible with this technique. First, keep the ball in front of you and at eye level. Keep looking towards the goal and think about the ball getting into that goal. Then repeat that when you take the shot.

Having a good foundation is key when shooting the ball. We have all seen the professional basketball player falling out of bounds and making a basket from 30 feet away, but this is not proper technique. These are not practiced skills, they are just flukes. Point your feet towards the basket, guide the ball with your weaker hand and push the ball away with your strong hand whenever you shoot the basketball.

Every great player understands how to properly perform a bounce pass. Bounce passes need to be at waist level when received. If it helps to measure it out, consider aiming for a mark on the floor about three-fourths of the way between you and your teammate. There are many factors which come into play, though.

If you experience a basketball injury, don't keep playing. This is an aggressive sport, and injuries happen often. If you try to keep playing, you can hurt yourself worse. See a physician if you think your injury is serious.

Pay attention closely to the shoulders if you're starting to slump when you shoot. If your shoulders aren't properly positioned, your shot is not going to go in. Your shoulders need to be squared up towards where you're shooting. Your dominant shoulder must be lined up with the rim.

You need to be quick to be good at basketball. You'll have an advantage if you're faster than an opponent. In order to be fast, you must constantly do drills. But do not try to play faster than you are able. When you play too fast, you can lose control and that means turnovers.

Make sure you know what is going on with your feet. An errant toe to the baseline while holding the ball will result in an "out of bounds" call. Taking excessive steps while not dribbling results in a call of walking as well as a turnover. You can't move a foot when you take a charge, pick or screen either, or it's a foul.
