Dedication is key to becoming a better basketball player. When you play for amusement, you still want to win! The information presented here is sure to help you improve your game, no matter what level you play at now.

Look forward and hold your head up while you dribble the ball. You need more practice if you feel that you cannot dribble without focusing on the ball. Take your basketball everywhere. On your way to the grocery store, practice your dribbling. Remember, if you are directly staring at the ball, there's no way for you to see what's happening on the court.

Balance is essential to shooting. Many the professional player can be seen slipping out of bounds or making baskets from far away, but these are not proper techniques. They are merely making up the play on the spot. By learning how to stay properly balanced, you can improve your game.

Practice layups often. Up to eighty percent of the baskets attempted in a game are layups. When you practice, run full speed ahead at the basket, jump, and shoot. Practicing this technique helps you learn to make layups during a game.

When an injury occurs while you are playing ball, don't keep playing with pain. You can easily tear a muscle or even break a finger while playing. Trying to play while injured will just make your situation worse. If the injury feels too bad then seek medical attention right away.

Never turn away from the ball so that you can always be prepared for what's coming. This will give you court awareness and keep you from being surprised by quick passes or turnover potentials. Also, you need to stay aware of areas which might open up and give you an easy basket.

When trying to improve your strength to have better basketball footwork, work on building up your core. Your body is going to be more balanced and be able to move faster when you have strong core muscles. Concentrate your efforts on the back, abdomen, buttocks and hips. Your speed and footwork can be improved by jumping rope.

Be aware of what your feet are doing and where they are. Out of bounds will happen with even one toe over the baseline of the lined play area on the court. You could also be the reason for a turnover if you get called for walking when you take more steps than allowed without dribbling. A foul will be called if your feet move while you attempt to screen other players.

Mix things up offensively to keep the other team's defense off-balance. Plant a foot and start to straighten your body. The guard is going to think you're starting to slow and will straighten up too. When they do this, push yourself forward and take the chance to run by them.

Start using the techniques and tips the next time you play a game of basketball. You will start to see improvement little by little as you remember what you've read, use the tips, and practice them. This will lead you on your way to success!
